Mumbai sees tallest waves in 100 years

Indo-Asian News Service
Mumbai, July 24: Sea waves rode the tarmac near the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Juhu and Worli among other places on Friday as India`s financial capital was lashed by tidal waves 5.5 metres high, billed as the highest in 100 years.
There were no reports of casualties during the high tide brought about by a combination of the monsoon and the strong gravitational pull of the moon two days after the new moon.
City authorities had issued advance warnings to people. Nearly 200 families had been evacuated from the coastal areas.
Huge waves crashed onto the retaining walls at Nariman Point, Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Marine Drive, Haji Ali, Worli Seaface, Bandra Bandstand, Juhu, Versova, Marve, Gorai, Bhandup and Vikhroli.
Water roared over roads near Prabhadevi, Worli, Juhu and Bandra part from the one near the Gateway of India just outside the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower Hotel.
Coastal areas near Mumbai, such as Thane, Bhayander, Uttan, Palghar, Boisar and Dahanu also experienced the unusual high tides.
The high tide started at 2.05 pm and the waters are to ebb at 8.09 pm when it will reach the lowest level of 0.77 metre, the weather bureau said.
Thousands of office-goers took time off to view the majestic natural phenomenon at various points across the city, though from a safe distance and under the watchful eyes of the authorities.
People living in high-rise buildings facing the Arabian Sea crowded the balconies in neighbourhoods like Borivli, Kandivli, Malad, Goregaon, Andheri, Bandra, Mahim and south Mumbai.
Saturday will be another day of high tide when waves measuring 4.94 metres are expected to hit the city at 2.43 pm, the weatherman added.
This has been a week of high tides. In the past two days, waves measuring 4.85 and 5.1 metres lashed Mumbai and the Konkan region.
Last week, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) had used newspaper advertisements to warn people of the potential damage that could be caused by the high tides and had given contact details for emergency services.
As many as 11 hotlines have been established and 34 rain gauges have been installed from where round-the-clock information is being collected. Control rooms have been set up at all the 24 civic wards. Officials said that MCGM would also monitor the situation in flood-prone areas through CCTVs

India`s first indigenous N-powered attack submarine launched

Indo-Asian News Service
Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), July 26: India on Sunday launched its first indigenous nuclear-powered attack submarine and Prime MinisterManmohan Singh said on the occasion that the navy had a major role to play in re-adjusting "our military preparedness".
Underlining that the sea was increasingly relevant in the context of India`s security interests, Manmohan Singh said: "We must re-adjust our military preparedness to this changing environment. Our navy has a huge responsibility in this regard."
The prime minister spoke at the headquarters of the Indian Navy`s Eastern Command here after his wife, Gursharan Kaur, broke a coconut and did a prayer to mark the launch of INS Arihant, a 6,000-tonne, 110-metre long and 11-metre wide submarine that can carry nearly 100 sailors.
India becomes the sixth country after the US, Russia, China, France and Britain to possess a nuclear-powered submarine.
The launch comes 25 years after the project was initiated when Indira Gandhi was the prime minister.
Calling Sunday`s event a "historic milestone", Manmohan Singh said: "We do not have any aggressive designs nor do we seek to threaten anyone. We seek an external environment in our region, and beyond that is conducive to our peaceful development and the protection of our value systems."
Manmohan Singh said the deep sea strategic capability was necessary in view of the increasing relevance of the sea in the country`s security scenario.
The dockyard where the submarine was housed was flooded before the vessel could be tugged out. Officials said it would take two years of sea trials before the vessel is commissioned into the navy.
The submarine was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel project. Powered by a nuclear reactor, INS Arihant, literally meaning the destroyer of all enemies, can stay below the water for indefinite period.
Like all submarines, it is capable of firing missiles and torpedoes. It is fitted with latest weapons and sensors. The steel for the submarine was cut in 1998.
Hailing the achievement, Defence Minister AK Antony said the "present situation in our neighbourhood" demanded greater acquisition of strategic assets.
Manmohan Singh and Antony did not take any country`s name. But the biggest navy in Asia is China`s. It is known to have 8-10 nuclear-powered submarines and 50-60 diesel-electric submarines.
The INS Arihant project was made successful by the close partnership of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and other public and private sector undertakings.
"Today is the first visible step towards realisation of creating the sea leg of our nuclear triad... It will provide us credible second strike capability," said India`s Navy chief, Admiral Sureesh Mehta.
The submarine will increase the reach and endurance of the Indian Navy, which seeks to become a true blue water navy and project its force beyond its borders.
The Russian help in the project was profusely appreciated by the prime minister.
Earlier, after the launch, Gursharan Kaur said: "Mai pandubbi ke sabhi nausainkon ke ujjawal bhavishya ki kamna karti hun." (I pray for the bright future of all the sailors onboard the submarine).

Celebspeak: Kareena isn’t immune to criticism

Indo-Asian News Service
Mumbai, July 22: Kareena Kapoor admits she gets upset when uncharitable remarks are made about her or her performance. Though the actress doesn't mind healthy criticism, she isn't amused when comments are made without any provocation or reason.
"I have realised over a period of time that the higher you go, more and more people will try to pull you down. I used to hear about this from my sister (Karisma) but am experiencing this first hand now. It isn't really funny actually," says Kareena.
Kareena was obviously referring to a section of the media coming down heavily on her since the release of "Kambakkht Ishq".
"Well, the movie has released, done well and it's time to move on to newer things. Critics had things to say about the film and it's okay if they didn't like the film. In any case, audiences had their own take on the film and they made the film a success. It's all balanced out at the end of the day," she explains.
Some critics did feel that the "Kambakkht Ishq" content was too abusive at places.
"That continues to beat me," she said in an amused tone. "Come on, it was just a movie. We were not developing any rocket science there. However, I guess some people did take it all personally and equated 'Kambakkht Ishq' to World War III," Kareena adds.
She can't be immune to criticism though, isn't it?
"Yes, I do tend to get upset and depressed when people try to pull me down. Sometimes it just comes from nowhere and you end up feeling that what did you really do so wrong to be facing such criticism.”
"But then I understand that there could be a phase in one's life when you get attacked from all corners. It's fine because I know it will pass," the actress who is looking forward to the release of "Qurbaan"before year-end.
She is happy though that she has a loyal set of friends, family members and supporters around her who help her keep her chin up.
"And then of course there is Saif," she perked up. "He has been around for so long and keeps me happy and smiling. Yes, there are detractors, but then there are supporters as well. After seeing Bollywood business closely for so long, I try not to take things too seriously."
Her "Tashan" didn't do well at the box office, but Kareena has had impressive releases over the last few years like "Omkara", "Jab We Met", "Golmaal Returns" and now "Kambakkht Ishq" doing well at the box office. In between, she also had a special appearance in another box office winner "Don – The Chase Begins Again".
"Yes, thankfully it has been a nice run. I'm now really looking forward to 'Qurbaan', 'Main Aur Mrs Khanna' and '3 Idiots'."

Mumbai braces for highest tide in 100 years

Indo Asian News Service

Mumbai, July 24: Nearly 200 people have been evacuated from coastal areas, warnings have been sent out to those in low-lying regions and schools have advised students to stay at home as India`s financial capital braces for a massive 5.5 metre high tidal wave, billed as the highest in 100 years, to lash it on Friday afternoon.

The high tide is expected to hit Mumbai and the surrounding Konkan region at 2.05 pm. The waters will ebb only after three to four hours, met officials said.

In the past two days, as waves measuring 4.85 and 5.1 metres lashed Mumbai, civic and disaster management authorities evacuated people - mostly shanty dwellers - from vulnerable areas like Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Andheri, Jogeshwari and even parts of neighbouring Thane.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has issued warnings to people in low-lying areas to watch out for the gigantic tide on Friday and take adequate precautions.

On Thursday, sea water rushed into several buildings in Cuffe Parade, Worli, Dadar, Prabhadevi, Andheri, Juhu, Khar and Malad.

Even mayor Shubha Raul`s official bungalow at Shivaji Park in Dadar was not spared. The huge waves knocked down a compound wall.

In Thane, the district adjacent to Mumbai, waterlogging attributed to the high tide was reported from residential areas in places like Uttan, Palghar, Boisar and Dahanu but there have been no casualties so far.

Some schools have advised students to stay at home in view of the high tide, but there has been no official announcement of closure by the government.

However, for many Mumbaikars, the tides offered a rare view of a natural phenomenon after clouds obscured the solar eclipse on Wednesday.

Thousands of people excitedly saw the tides from a safe distance at places like Colaba, Marine Drive, Girgaum Chowpatty, Worli Sea-Face, Bandra Bandstand, Juhu Beach, Gorai Beach and Marve Beach yesterday. Today, greater numbers are expected.

Crowds had assembled even at the Thane Creek and commuters were seen craning their necks to see the swirling waters as the trains crossed the railway bridges at Bhayander Creek.

Last week, the MCGM had inserted big and small advertisements in newspapers, warning people of the potential damage that could be wreaked by the high tides and contact details for emergency services.

As many as 11 hotlines have been established and 34 rain gauges have been installed from where round-the-clock information is being collected. Control rooms have been set up at all the 24 civic wards.

Officials said that MCGM would also monitor the situation in flood-prone areas through CCTVs.

NRI woman faces jail with boyfriend

London, Feb 25: An Indian-origin woman faces jail along with her partner after sailing around the world in a 100,000 pound yacht while claiming government aid meant for the disabled and jobless.

Shashi Bacheta,52, and Jeffrey Coles 58, spent nearly two years sailing around the world on the 70ft vessel, living off the proceeds from their post office and property businesses.

At the same time they defrauded the government of a range of allowances meant for the severely ill.

Bacheta claimed she was so ill she could not get out of bed - entitling her to the government`s `disability living allowance` as well as unemployment benefit - when in fact she was scuba diving off the Kenyan coast.

By the end of the sailing trip the mother of one had claimed nearly 50,000 pounds in housing benefits, disability living allowances, local `council tax` relief and income support.

Partner Coles helped her to obtain an extra 12,000 pounds in a benefit scam that ran from 2002 to 2008.

The benefit scam came to light in 2007 after a retired policewoman and her husband, who were also sailing around the world, came across Bacheta and Coles in the Canary Islands.

Months later, a fraud investigator, found references to Bacheta and Coles on an internet blog being written by the policewoman and her husband.

Investigator Jeff Fish said,"We later carried out a search of their home and found PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructor) records relating to Bacheta scuba diving off Mombasa, Kenya”.

"We also found they had been in their yacht off the coast of South Africa."

They were arrested in January 2008.

Bacheta and Coles, who were due to begin a 15-day trial on Monday, changed their plead at the last minute to guilty to a variety of benefit fraud charges, and were granted bail.

Judge Huw Davies postponed sentencing until next month, but warned the couple they faced jail sentences.

Bacheta`s 28-year-old daughter, Anju, had already pleaded guilty to fraudulently claiming to be her mother`s full-time carer.

Melanie Surridge, a government official dealing with the case, said, "It was quite staggering. This lady, while claiming to be bedridden, was in fact regularly able to go scuba diving with her boyfriend`s yacht."

Tal Davies, the investigations manager at Swansea council, said, "They were stealing from all those people who pay their taxes to help provide important public services. It was an affront to those who can`t afford the lifestyle they had been enjoying."

Annual rate of inflation falls marginally

Annual rate of inflation falls marginally

Indo Asian News service

New Delhi, July 30: India's annual rate of inflation fell marginally to minus 1.54 per cent for the week ending on July 18 from minus 1.17 the week before, according to official data released on Thursday.

The rate turned negative for the week ended June 6 for the first time since the new wholesale price index (WPI) series started in 1995.

The inflation rate had last turned negative in 1977. Negative inflation implies that the average wholesale price level was lower during a given week, than it was in the corresponding week a year ago. It does not necessarily reflect retail prices.

The price index for primary articles rose 0.3 per cent to 261.1 (provisional) from 260.3 (provisional) the week before, while that for manufactured products declined 0.1 per cent.

The price index for fuel and power declined 0.1 per cent to 338.2 (provisional) from 338.4 (provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of aviation turbine fuel (7 per cent).

The final data for the week ended on May 23 showed that the revised annual inflation rate actually stood at 1.34 per cent

Oil ministry stand will erode investor confidence: Ani

Oil ministry stand will erode investor confidence: Anil

Indo-Asian News Service

New York, July 30: The partisan stand adopted by India's petroleum ministry in the dispute over natural gas between two corporate houses will erode investor confidence and goes against the government's reforms direction, industrialist Anil Ambani has said.

In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, Ambani, whose Reliance Natural Resources is fighting a legal battle with brother Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries over supply of gas from fields off the Andhra Pradesh coast, said the oil ministry's position also violated the sanctity of contracts.

"Clearly, the petroleum ministry's unfortunate intervention in a corporate commercial dispute in this manner, if permitted to continue, will erode investor confidence and thwart the government's efforts to attract investments into India," said Anil Ambani.

"In complete reversal to the entire direction of economic reforms being implemented by our respected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the petroleum ministry is regrettably pursuing a different path," he charged.

Ambani also said that the oil ministry was seeking a return of the erstwhile regime of command and control, often referred to as the "licence permit raj", when all business decisions had to be authorised by the government on an ad-hoc basis.

He said by intervening in the dispute, the ministry was aiming to re-write a valid production-sharing contract after nearly 10 years, and also seeking to cancel a bonafide agreement between third party corporate entities.

"What then is the sanctity of a contract, which is the fundamental cornerstone of any law-abiding, market-driven economy? And will this not set a precedent, allowing any ministry to alter any contracts in the future at will?" he queried.

"This will also naturally have adverse policy implications for private investments in all natural resources, which are subject to similar considerations."

He said he was deeply concerned by the oil ministry's stand that tantamounts to deciding who should sell gas, to whom, at what price and in what quantity without any heed to commercial considerations or contractual provisions.

Reliance Natural Resources and Reliance Industries are fighting a bitter battle over the price and supply of natural gas from what is called the Krishna-Godavari basin, off the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Last month, the Bombay High Court had asked Reliance Industries to supply 28 million units of gas from the fields to Reliance Natural Resources for 17 years at $2.34 per unit after assigning 12 million units to a state-run power utility NTPC.

But Reliance Industries challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court, which heard the case on July 20 and fixed September 1 as the next date of hearing. It also asked all parties to file their replies on the government position on the matter by then

Kuala Lumpur, Feb 24: Zookeepers in Malaysia`s southern Johor state have named two new African lion cubs after US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, a news report said on Tuesday.

Obama and Hillary, along with another female cub yet to be named, were born in captivity at the Johor Zoo on January 16th”, zookeeper Mohamad Sham said.

"Obama, the president, and Obama, the lion cub, can both trace their ancestry back to Africa, so there is a definite connection there," Sham quoted.

The cubs were born to Siti and Sarip, nine-year old African lions.

"It is curious, playful and hates being caged up," Sham said of little Obama.

Obama and Hillary have been the major draw at the zoo since their birth, with tourists and visitors flocking to have their pictures taken with the namesakes of the US politicians

Chand Muhammad returns to Hinduism

Chand again Chander Mohan, returns to Hinduism

Indo-Asian News Service
Chandigarh, July 28: The much talked about Chand-Fiza love saga took a fresh twist on Tuesday with the former Haryana deputy chief minister returning to both Hinduism and his original name of Chander Mohan. This raised a question mark over the status of his second wife, Anuradha Bali, who had changed her name to Fiza before their marriage.
Chander Mohan visited a temple in the Haryana's Hisar town, some 275 km from here, and returned to Hinduism in the presence of religious leaders.
"I apologized before my community and I have realized that marrying Fiza was the biggest mistake of his life," Chander Mohan said after re-adopting the Hindu religion.
Chander Mohan on Monday expressed his desire to return to the Hindu religion, saying he loved his mother very much and wanted to stay with her.
Son of former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal, Chander Mohan had lost the deputy chief minister's post after marrying Fiza.
The duo married secretly in Nov 2008 after converting to Islam. At that time, Chand was married to Seema Bishnoi and they have three children.
Chand and Fiza had surfaced after their marriage in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut city in Dec 2008. After staying together for nearly 40 days, Chand suddenly left her house and was later traced in London.
Adding drama to the controversial marriage, he then "divorced" her over the phone and through SMS in February 2009. But in June, he apologised to her and again started living with her in her house in Mohali town, adjoining Chandigarh.
Chand met with an accident on July 8, fracturing his hip joint. At that time, Fiza was in Malaysia to take part in a reality show

Court admits petition for early end to Reliance gas dispute

Court admits petition for early end to Reliance gas dispute

Indo Asian News Service

New Delhi, July 30: Anil Ambani-led Reliance Natural Resources moved the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking an early settlement of the dispute with Reliance Industries over gas from the Krishna-Godavari basin, even as the government withdrew its affidavit as an intervener on the matter.

According to Mahesh Agarwal, Counsel for Reliance Natural Resources, the Supreme Court admitted his client`s petition and asked all the parties to appear before it on September 1. The court also said an earlier date may be fixed for final hearing.

Both the government and Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries supported the petition that seeks early resolution of the dispute over natural gas from the fields off the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

The government, meanwhile, withdrew its special leave petition, which wanted the court to quash the production-sharing contract between the two companies. A modified version is expected later this week.

Last month, the Bombay High Court had asked Reliance Industries to supply 28 million units of gas from Krishna-Godavari basin to Reliance Natural Resources for 17 years at $2.34 per unit, after assigning 12 million units to the state-run power utility NTPC.

But Reliance Industries challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court, which heard the case on July 20 and fixed September 1 as the next date of hearing. It also asked all parties to file their replies on the government position on the matter by then.

Wednesday had seen the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, adjourn more than once when some members, led by Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, asked for Petroleum Minister Murli Deora`s resignation over the matter.

Their main contention was that the petroleum ministry was unable to ensure gas supplies from the Reliance gas fields to the crucial Dadri power project in Uttar Pradesh on the outskirts of the national capital.

The Swedish telecom major acquired Toronto-based Nortel's wireless business for 1.3 billion dollars at a court-supervised auction in New York Friday.

The 127-year-old telecom equipment maker Nortel is selling its businesses to pay its creditors after posting losses of $5 billion last year.

However, opposition parties want to the government annul the sale to keep Nortel's next-generation wireless technology in Canadian hands.

The Toronto Star, the biggest daily newspaper, also threw its weight behind the campaign Wednesday to stop Nortel's sale to the Swedish company. The most left-wing newspaper in North America said: "The government should not hesitate to intervene again to keep Nortel's assets in Canadian hands.''

In an editorial titled 'Nortel's priceless assets', the newspaper said: "Yes, the Swedes and Finns and Germans and Americans - all of whom want pieces of Nortel - would squawk. But does anyone believe for a moment that, if the roles were reversed, any of them would hesitate to intervene?''

The newspaper, which also advocates freedom for Al-Jazeera to operate from Canadian soil, said that despite courts in Canada and the US approving the Nortel sale Tuesday, the government should use the Investment Canada Act to stop the deal.

Nationalism entered the Nortel sale last week after the BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) was shut out of the bidding process for refusing to sign non-disclosure agreements with Nortel.

BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie turned it into a nationalist issue, saying that the sale of Nortel's the next-generation wireless technolgy - called Long Term Evolution or LTE - to foreigners was not in the national interest.

Praising him, the Toronto Star said, "Give Jim Balsillie credit. The BlackBerry billionaire has certainly caught the attention of the politicians.''
