After 45 days of intensive investigations, Chennai police today claimed to have cracked the murder- mystery of a gold broker with the arrest of one Nimmichand Chowdary at Sowcarpet where he was an employee in a jewellery shop.

.
The murder was one of the most gory incidents ever as the killer chopped the body of the victim and threw away the parts in different areas of Chennai. Though the culprit has landed in the police net, the head of the victim Kumar is yet to be traced.

Speaking to reporters in the city, Chennai Police Commissioner T Rajendran said, ‘We were able to catch the culprit with the clues obtained from a receipt found in the Kumar’s trouser pocket. Then we formed nine special teams and it enquired more than 60 people, including 20 gold brokers, at Sowcarpet.’

He further said, ‘On the day of the crime, Kumar is said to have taken 2.15 kg gold from a trader called Bhavan Kumar at Chepauk to deliver it to Gopi at Sowcarpet. Gopi was a trader from Kannur, Kerala.

Soon after confirming that Gopi was not behind the incident, the team started looking for other clues. Investigations revealed that Suresh was last seen near Andiappan Street on 6 June. In the meantime, the police recovered a skull from near Mannady and that further complicated the case.

However after confirming that the head was not that of victim, police rounded up seven gold merchants from the area. They conducted enquiries and kept watch on suspected persons.
Finding Nimmichand’s behaviour overly suspicious, police grilled him and raided his house this morning. Later, a cornered Nimmichand confessed to the murder for gain. He said he wanted money to pay his debts to the tune of Rs 10 lakh.

Police also seized 2.180 kgs of gold from the house, he said. Nimmichand is said to have taken Suresh to his house and committed the murder. The murder took place after a quarrel broke out between them in connection with their trade at the murderer’s house.

The assailant killed Suresh with an iron rod and returned to his shop. Later at 10 pm he severed the body parts in his house and washed them before taking them out. Later, he packed the dismembered body and disposed of them separately at different places around Periamet and Elephant Gate on 6 June.

He is said to have dumped the head behind MKB Nagar police station and hid the gold in one of his relative’s house.Soon after this, the accused went to Rajasthan, got admitted to a hospital to get treatment for his health problems and returned after 20 days with his family members.

Interestingly none of the residents of the nearby houses and lodges interrogated by the police supported this theory with their evidence, as it was a pre-determined murder, the Commissioner said.

‘Now the police have their task cut out for them. They have to trace the victim’s head to bring the case to its logical conclusion. Police have seized a wheeler and the iron rod used for the murder.
