The Left parties’ honeymoon with the AIADMK hit a roadblock on Friday, with the CPI(M) and CPI deciding to ignore their alliance partner’s boycott call and contest the by-elections to five Assembly seats.

CPI(M) State secretary N Varadarajan and CPI Tamilnadu secretary D Pandian, after chairing their parties’ respective State executive in Tiruchi, jointly announced that they would contest the bypolls.
.
They however maintained that their decision to contest the polls would not cause any problem for the non-Congress, non-BJP alliance in the State.

They said the CPI(M) would contest from Thondamuthur and Cumbum, while the CPI would field candidates in Bargur and Srivaikuntam.

A ‘friendly party’ would contest the Ilayangudi seat, they said, but refused to name that party. In case the friendly party backed out, one of the two parties would contest the Ilayangudi seat, according to the leaders of the parties.

‘It is their decision’, they said when asked about the AIADMK’s decision to boycott the bypolls on the ground that the by-elections would not be free and fair.

However, the two other allies of AIADMK- PMK and MDMK have decided to toe the line of the AIADMK and boycott the bypolls.

Though the Left, like their partner, had also accused the DMK of distributing money and intimidating voters during the Lok Sabha polls and Thirumangalam bypolls, the two parties said boycott would not address this issue, which could only be fought politically.

AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa, after chairing her party’s executive meeting in Connoor last week announced that the party would not contest the by-elections this time.

With DMK at the helm of affairs in the State, the Election Commission would not be able to conduct the bypolls in a free and fair manner, she alleged, adding that the party’s decision had been conveyed to MDMK. She also said she would convey the same to PMK and the two Left allies.

However, the boycott decision taken by the AIADMK has not found favour with the Left parties as they decided to field candidates and face the elections.
